| Guidelines
for Blood Donors
At the time you actually give blood
– you’ll be asked to complete a medical questionnaire.
Please be very candid – honest – with your answers.
It’s for your protection – as well as the recipient’s.
In general:
You need to be in good heath – between the ages of 18 and
65 (16/17 year olds may donate with parent’s permission) –
weigh at least 110 pounds – have a blood pressure of 90-160
over 60-100.
Your questionnaire will ask about
behaviors that are known to carry a higher risk of blood-borne
infections — infections that are transmitted through the blood
– for example: intravenous drug use – prostitution.
Some physical conditions may cause
your offer to be declined/deferred:
anemia – body piercings –
current cold or flu – hepatitis – HIV/AIDS - an infection
– organ/tissue transplants – sexually transmitted disease
Time allocation: the
actual blood collecting from you will take about 10 minutes. The
time from when you get to your local donation center until you leave
will be about one hour.
Getting prepared to donate:
get enough sleep and rest – take no medications nor alcohol
24 hours beforehand – have something to eat before the donation
- drink lots of fluids like juice or water.
