Blood
TYPES – everyone
has one
A simple
primer for blood types…
Why blood types are deadly serious
There are 4 BASIC TYPES
of blood. When you count
‘positive’ and ‘negative’ – there
are eight categories.
They are called: A(+
or -) – B(+
or -) – AB(+
or -) – O(+
or -)
Here’s how the classifications are determined.
There are two distinct chemical modules present on
the
surface of red blood cells. On molecule is referred to as
“Molecule A” – the other “Molecule
B”.
If the red blood cell had only "A"
molecules on it, that blood is called Type A.
If the red blood cell had only "B"
molecules on it, that blood is called Type B.
If the red blood cell had a mixture of both
molecules, that blood is called Type AB.
If the red blood cell had neither the “A
Molecule” nor the “B Molecule”,
that blood is called Type O.
The Potential Big Problem
with Blood Types:
If two different blood types
are mixed together, the blood cells may begin to clump together
in the blood vessels, causing a potentially fatal situation.
That’s why it’s
important that blood types be matched before blood transfusions
take place.
In an emergency, Type O blood can
be given because it is most likely (no guarantees) to be
accepted by all blood types – but there is still a serious
risk involved.
